23rd BMMC Congress

1. The 23rd Congress of Blakan Military Medical Committee (BMMC) will be held between 11th and 14th May 2018 in Antalya, Turkey.

2. The main topic of the congress is: “Battlefield Medical Support”. The subjects are: Mass Casualties and Disaster Medicine, Aerospace Medicine, Sea, Undersea and Diving Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Surgery, Basic Sciences.

3. The participation of Officers from Health Services of Armed Forces and students of Military Schools requires at least one oral scientific presentation. The official language of the congress is English. 

4. Officers (military doctors, dentists, veterinarians, pharmacists, nurses, psycologists) wishing to attend are requested to submit their abstracts on the official website of “Interconnection of Military Hospitals (IMIHO)” https://www.imiho.org. (Submit abstract to BMMC and select the appropriate national flag). Abstract submission requires registration to receive a password for login.

5. The abstract should meet the following:

  • Font: Arial 12.
  • Maximum number of words: 250 (not including title, authors and institution).
  • Title of abstract: in capital letters.
  • Rank for all authors (first the rank following by the name).
  • Surname in capital letters and small name with small.
  • Underline and bold font of presentors' name.
  • Abstract structure as Annex A.

6. According to BMMC MoU, one oral and one poster presentation from each country will be nominated for the “Best Military Medical Paper Award” and “Best Military Medical Poster Award”, respectively. The Scientific Committee will decide for the awards, based on the following criteria: military relevance, applicability, originality, methodology and presentation.

7. During the scientific program, two round tables will be organized with the following topics: a. Approach to multi trauma casualties. b. CBRN threats in our region and current medical approaches.

8. Each participant will be required to pay 50 € for registration fee. The Congress venue will be the “Adalya Elite Lara” Hotel, both in terms of accommodation and scientific activities. Accomodation will be 50 € per person per night in a double room and 94 € per person per night in a single room, on a standard all-inclusive basis (breakfast, lunch and dinner).

22nd BMMC Congress, Belgrade (2017)

22nd BMMC Congress was held between 25th and 28th September 2017 in Belgrade, Serbia. The main topic of the Congress was “Balkan Military Medicine – Current Approaches”. Two hundred and six (206) participants from six member countries attended the Congress. A total number of two hundred and eighty-nine (289) scientific papers - one hundred and fifty-nine (159) oral, one hundred and thirty (130) poster presentations - were presented. Greece participated with 81 papers, of which 39 were oral and 42 poster presentations. The Greek delegates were 34 Officers and four students.

Serbian National Board hosted the 7th Annual Meeting of the Chiefs of Military Medical Services of BMMC countries. The main topic of the meeting was “Specialists’ Scientific Exchange Program αmong BMMC Members”. The Chiefs of delegations agreed upon benefits of creating a program for exchanging medical personnel and students among BMMC member countries. The 7th BMMC Student Meeting was held in the framework of the Congress on the 27th of September followed by Nurses’ Session. Both sessions were successful and attended by many delegates. 

Four roundtables were organized during the scientific program, with the following topics: «Transplantation of solid organs and stem cells», «Up-to-date in treatment of acute and chronic wounds», «Military Medicine in Peacekeeping Operations – exchange of experiences» and «Modern Digital Technologies in Military Medicine».

20th BMMC Congress, Thessaloniki (2015)

20th BMMC Congress was held in Thessaloniki, Greece between 08 and 11 June 2015. The main topic of the congress was: “20 years of BMMC. Past, Present, Future”.
One hundred and ninety four (194) participants from six member countries participated. In particular there were eleven (11) participants from Albania, thirty four (34) from Bulgaria, fifty two (52) from Greece, fourteen (14) from Romania, thirty (30) from Serbia and forty two (42) from Turkey. Furthermore, there were eleven (11) observers, six American military doctors from 30th Medical Brigade/Germany, two from USA, one from Belgium and two from Netherlands, which attended the Congress. A total number of three hundred and forty eight (348) scientific papers from the six member countries of BMMC (Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Serbia and Turkey), one hundred and seventy two (172) oral and one hundred and seventy six (176) poster presentations were presented. 

Greek National Board hosted the 5th Annual Meeting of the Chiefs of Military Medical Services of BMMC countries. The main topic of the meeting was “Periodical Preventive Health Examination of the Military Personnel”. The 5th BMMC Student Meeting was held in the framework of the Congress on the 9th of June. Three (3) medical students from Greece, two (2) from Romania, two (2) from Turkey and one (1) from Serbia attended the BMMC Student Meeting with eight (8) presentations. 

Two round tables took place: «Causes of secondary hypertension in young age groups of Armed Forces» and «The main zoonotic diseases, threat to public health».
A Hyper-realistic simulation workshop took place during the Congress. The attendance of the workshop allowed participants to make use of different skills for treatment of Massive Bleeding, Airway Injuries, Thoracic Injuries etc. Greek National Board presented the history of BMMC via a video. This practice was highly appreciated and encouraged to be continued.

19th BMMC Congress, Plovdiv (2014)

19th BMMC Congress was held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, between 07 and 10 May 2014. The main topic of the congress was: “Military Medical Means and Capabilities as an Asset for Civil Military Interaction”. One hundred and seventy-three (173) participants, including accompanying persons from the six member countries were present at the Congress. A total number of three hundred and twenty-one (321) scientific papers from six member countries (Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Serbia and Turkey), one hundred and forty-eight (148) oral and one hundred and seventy-three (173) poster presentations were presented.

Bulgarian National Board hosted the 4th Annual Meeting of the Chiefs of Military Medical Services and Academies of BMMC countries. The main topic of the meeting was “Exchange of military medical personnel (doctors, nurses and students) aiming for materialization within 2015’’. The 4th BMMC Student Meeting was held in the framework of the Congress. In total, fifteen (15) medical students participated (two from Romania; two from Turkey; one from Serbia and ten from Greece).

18th BMMC Congress,Istanbul (2013)

18th BMMC Congress was held from 22 to May 26, 2013 in Istanbul, Turkey. The main topic of the congress was “Medical Support of Operations” Two hundred and seventy-five (275) participants from five member countries (Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Serbia and Turkey) and seven observers from non-member countries including The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Belgium, United Kingdom, United States and two attendees from Kosovo were present at the Congress. A total number of four hundred and eighteen (418) scientific papers, one hundred and seventy-two (172) oral and two hundred and forty-six (246) poster presentations were presented.

One plenary session regarding “Visual health quality - from recruitment to retirement”, a Biodefense workshop and Emergency Ultrasound (Fast-E) in The Field Course, were also held. Turkish National Board hosted the 3rd Annual Meeting of the Chiefs of Military Medical Services and Academies of BMMC countries.

The main topic of the meeting was “Prophylaxis and Preventive Health Care pre, during and post deployment”. The 3rd BMMC Student Meeting was held in the framework of the Congress. The topic of the session was “All Aspects of Scientific Research as a Part of Medical Education”. Two medical students from Romania, ten medical students, four nursing students and two health technician students from Turkey, two medical students from Serbia and five medical students from Greece attended the BMMC Student Meeting.

17th BMMC Congress,Belgrade (2012)

17th BMMC Congress was held in Belgrade, Serbia, between 29th of May and 1st of June 2012. The main topic of the congress was «Further Development of the Military Medical Cooperation of BMMC Members and Education of Experts in Military Medicine». Two hundred and senety three (273) participants from five member countries of BMMC (Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Serbia and Turkey) and one observer from Montenegro attended the Congress. A total number of three hundred and thirty one (331) scientific papers, one hundred and thirty seven (137) oral and one hundred and ninety four (194) poster presentations were presented.

A plenary session with the topic “Atherosclerosis” was organized during the congress. .The 2nd Annual Meeting of the Chiefs of Military Medical Services and Academies of BMMC countries was held. The main topic of the meeting was “Further development of the military medical cooperation among members of the BMMC and education of medical personnel in military medicine”. The 2nd BMMC Student Meeting was held in the framework of the Congress with the participation of one medical student from Romania, two from Turkey, four from Serbia and one nursing school student from Greece. During that meeting a workshop named “Battlefield Life Support” was also organized by Serbian National Board.

16th BMMC Congress,Bucharest (2011)

16th BMMC Congress was held in Bucharest, Romania, between 1st and 4th June 2011. The main topic of the congress was: “Past, Present and Future of Military Medicine in Balkans”. Two hundred and sixteen (216) participants from six member countries of BMMC (Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Serbia and Turkey) attended the congress. A total number of two hundred and forty three (243) scientific papers were presented, one hundred and eighteen (118) oral and one hundred and twenty five (125) poster presentations.

Four round tables were performed with the topics as following: “Polytrauma Patients’ Care: Aspects of Emergency Medical Service and ICU Department”, “Multiaxial Diagnosis in Depressive Disorders: Clinical and Therapeutic Dimensions”, “New Trends in Aviation and Diving Medicine” and “Telemedicine: Present and Future in BMMC”.

A meeting for the Chiefs of Military Medical Services took place, where Chiefs of BMMC delegations presented the organization and tasks of military medical systems. A corresponding meeting was decided to take place every year during the congress. The first BMMC student meeting was held on the framework of the congress with the purpose of encouraging communication and future collaboration between military medical academies of BMMC member countries. It was decided such a meeting to be organized during every BMMC congress, in case enough presentations from medical/nursing students were submitted.

15th BMMC Congress,Pieria (2010)

15th BMMC Congress was held in Pieria, Greece, between 30 May and 3 June 2010. The main topic of the congress was: "Military Preventive Medicine". The congress was attended by one hundred and seventy three (173) participants from the five member countries of BMMC (Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Serbia and Turkey), one candidate member country (Albania) and two observer countries (Montenegro and Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia). A total number of three hundred (300) scientific papers, one hundred and sixty one (161) oral and one hundred and thirty nine (139) poster presentations were presented.

Five round tables were performed with the following topics: “Prevention of Infectious Diseases”, “Prevention of Mental Health Disorders”, “Emergency Medicine”, “The Role of Military Medicine on Disaster Relief Operations” and “New Trends in Aviation and Diving Medicine”.

Greek National Board organized a training course on “Basic Life Support” accredited by the European Resuscitation Council. It also introduced the “Machaon Award” after the first military surgeon Machaon for the best presentation on military medicine. 

An annual award named as "The Best Military Medical paper Award" was established for the best oral presentation of the congress.

14th BMMC Congress,Burgas (2009)

14th BMMC Congress was held from 10 to 14 May 2009 in Burgas, Bulgaria. The Congress was attended by one hundred and fifty seven (157) Health Professional Officers of the five member countries and one candidate member country (Albania). A total of two hundred and forty seven (247) scientific papers were presented, one hundred and forty six (146) oral and one hundred and one (101) poster presentations.

The main topic of the Congress was: "Multinational Military Medical Cooperation on the Balkans and on Missions Abroad".
Three round tables were organized with the following topics: “Military Medical Cooperation in Missions Abroad and Disasters”, “Combat Stress and Burnout in Military Practice” and “The Role of Military Nurses in the Armed Forces”.

During the Congress Opening Ceremony, the candidate membership of Albania was approved and signed by the Chiefs of BMMC member countries.

13th BMMC Congress,Kysadasi (2008)

13th BMMC Congress was held in Kysadasi, Turkey between 1st and 5th June 2008. Two hundred and sixty two (262) specialists participated from the four BMMC member countries (Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and Turkey) and the member country Serbia and three observer countries (Albania, FYROM and Montenegro). Four hundred and sixty one (461) scientific papers were presented, one hundred and fifty two (152) oral and three hundred and nine (309) poster presentations.

Three round tables were performed with the themes: “Imaging in Emergency Medicine”, “Aerospace Medicine” and “Military Medical Education and Training”.
